Electric Bike Classes 1, 2 & 3 Explained
2026-06-01 · 6 min read
Class 1, 2 and 3 decide where you can legally ride and how fast. A commuter's guide to picking the right class.
Why classes exist
In the U.S., e-bikes are grouped into three classes that determine how fast the motor assists and where you can ride. Understanding them saves you legal headaches and helps you buy the right bike.
Class 1, 2 and 3
Class 1 provides pedal-assist up to about 20 mph. Class 2 adds a throttle, also up to about 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist up to about 28 mph and is popular with commuters who want more speed. Local rules on where each class can ride — bike lanes, paths, trails — vary.
Which class suits you
Commuters covering distance often prefer Class 3 for speed; casual and trail riders lean Class 1; riders who want throttle-on-demand pick Class 2. Cargo and comfort e-bikes span all three. Always check local trail and path rules before buying.
